Rebuild the Bridges - Wilderness Park
The Great Plains Trails Network (GPTN) is working on a project to rebuild two bridges as part of the Rebuild the Bridges-Wilderness Park project. GPTN is in the process of raising money and applying for grants to make this a reality.
This project is important as these bridges serve miles of pristine trails which are now unreachable with the bridge out. The cost to replace the bridges is over $500,000.
Wilderness Park is unique to Lincoln in that it offers visitors an opportunity to have a wilderness experience without leaving the City. Single-track trails wander through this saline ecosystem that hosts many species of native plants and animals, including deer and turkey. The Wilderness Park trails are different from other Lincoln trails in that users can challenge themselves on more difficult terrain or chose a more leisurely option.
Without the bridges, visitors cannot enjoy a continuous trail through the park. The bridges provide vital links in the trails network. Wilderness Park is one of the gemstones of the Lincoln trails system. Rebuilding the bridges is an investment in the community, making Lincoln a more attractive place to live and visit.
